Project of the Year Grand Prize Winner at the 2007 EB Owner’s Meeting

PROJECT SITE:  Whistler, British Columbia

EB MODELS UTILIZED:  EB-60, TM-45MD, and EB-90 (the EB-90 is a discontinued model)

PROJECT/CHALLENGES:  Denbow was contracted by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) to provide Erosion Control and Revegetation Services for the Whistler Nordic Competition Venue in Whistler BC – the site where all cross-country and jumping activities will take place during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The Whistler Nordic venue is part of a C$620 million investment funded equally by the Governments of Canada and British Columbia. The 250-hectare project (approximately 620 acres) involves competition trails, ski jumps, a biathlon facility, three temporary stadiums each with spectator capacity of 12,000, sewer/water/power services, access roads and internal roads, parking lots, a lodge and other related infrastructure facilities in the Callaghan Valley, southwest of the Whistler Resort.

PRODUCTS APPLIED:  Construction of the Whistler Nordic Venue resulted in significant woody debris from site preparation which posed an environmental challenge for the venue development team. The challenge became an opportunity to use the wood waste in ways that kept most of the organic material in its original ecological system and enhanced conservation. Denbow composted this material on-site to use for EcoBlankets®, SiltSoxx™, and as a growing medium for landscaping.

QUANTITIES/DISTANCE: A total of 30,000 yd3 of material was ground and composted onsite, pneumatically placed as EcoBlanket™ and Terraseeded™.
