Project of the Year Grand Prize Winner at the 2006 EB Owner’s Meeting

COMPANY: The Hills Bark Blower

LOCATION: Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia

PROJECT SITE:  Sydney Wildlife World

EB MODELS UTILIZED:  TM-30 and RB-20HD

PROJECT/CHALLENGES:  Install three different product layers into most animal enclosures.  The products were chosen to copy the animals’ natural environment.  Access was a challenge as the shell of the building was already erected when the landscape products needed to be installed. The truck had a small area to the side of the site that it could park, and then the product was installed winding hoses throughout walkways and enclosures. As with most active construction sites, dozens of things were happening at once adding to the challenges.

PRODUCTS APPLIED:  A sub base consisting of a mix of river sand, blue metal, sandy loam, scoria, and ash.  Also a layer of Planter Box Mix specifically made for this site.  Probably the most interesting product installed was red sand that had been brought from outback Northern Territory.

QUANTITIES/DISTANCE:  1300m3 (approx. 1700 cu. yds.) up to 152m (or 500 feet)

COMPANY PROFILE:  The Hills Bark Blower is the first and the largest company in Australia to supply and install landscape supplies through Express Blower™ machines. They currently run three Express Blower™ units.

Other tradesmen were fascinated with the method of filling the enclosure with soil and would often stop to have a look.  The mesh being covered in this photo was laid to stop the wombats from digging down to the concrete.
Semi Arid Grasslands habitat:  Installed in excess of 1200 tonne (1322 ton) of the sub base and Planter Box Mix followed by approximately 150 tonne (165 ton) of the red sand.
The levels of the enclosures vary as the visitors walk through the park. This posed a challenge to the installation for the Hills Bark Blower as the further along construction went, the more convoluted the access became.
